Girls golf: Ponies struggle against the elements at Prestwick

The tough conditions on Thursday took a toll on the Stillwater girls’ golf team, which posted a season-high total of 219 to place eighth in a Suburban East Conference meet at Prestwick Golf Club.

The Ponies had not placed outside the top five in any of their three previous matches this season, East Ridge posted a winning score of 177 and Forest Lake followed in second place at 185.

“What an amazingly tough day,” Ponies coach Nate Schwarz said. “We took the brunt of the weather no doubt, along with Cretin-Derham Hall and Hastings, who also struggled, but not as much as we did.”

Erin Thiets led the Ponies with a 49 while Sydney O’Neal came through with flying colors in his first-ever varsity match to contribute a 55. Maddie Luoma (57) and Amanda Wolf closed out the scoring with a 57 and 58 while Leah Kroenning and Rachel Billingsley were one shot back at 59.

“We’re giving way too many shots away around the greens. There will be a renewed focus on the short game in the next week.”
