Boys golf: Sicard leads Ponies to third-place finish

FOREST LAKE — Sophomore Sammy Sicard recorded his fourth straight round in the 70s to help Stillwater to a third-place finish in Thursday’s Suburban East Conference boys’ golf meet at Forest Hills Golf Club.

Sicard shot a 3-over 75 to share medalist honors with Forest Lake’s Trevor Thompson and Daniel Massey on their home course. It was the second win of the season for Sicard, who also posted the low round during a nonconference match at Stillwater Country Club on Monday.

“Great round by Sammy,” Scanlon said. “He is really impressive and earns everything he achieves through talent and a tremendous work ethic — a super nice guy, too.”

Lars Lillehei and Evan Anderson carded 83s for the Ponies while Crosby Joy and Tyler Fitzsimmons each finished one shot back with an 84. Will Henschell played well outside of one disastrous hole, but taking a 12 on the par-4 15th hole — which features water all along the right side of the hole and on three sides surrounding the green — took him out of contention.

And though Sicard was able to birdie the treacherous 15th hole, Henschell wasn’t the only player who struggled there as 2011 individual state champion Max Kelly of Forest Lake took a nine. Sicard also birdied the short par-3 10th hole.

Thompson and Massey sent the Rangers to a 10-shot victory with a score of 312. Hastings was the runner-up at 321 and the Ponies followed in third at 325, which was two shots clear of fourth-place Roseville (327).

“We feel good about our position and think we can continue to move up in the conference,” Ponies coach John Scanlon said. “WE have the meat of our scheduled next week with three consecutive conference matches. I think we have a great lineup coming together.”

Stillwater is slated to compete at River Oaks on Tuesday, Highland National on Wednesday and Hastings Country Club on Thursday.

l TJ Giebler shot a 79 to lead Stillwater to an eighth-place finish at the Clifton Hollow Invite on Thursday with a score of 329. Hill-Murray, which is a Section 4AAA foe for the Ponies, won the event with a score of 302.
