Girls golf: Kroening sets pace for Ponies

NORTH OAKS — Just six shots separated the top five teams in Tuesday’s Suburban East Conference girls’ golf meet at North Oaks Golf Club, with Stillwater placing fifth with a score of 194. Forest Lake edged Woodbury 188-190 for the top spot while East Ridge (191) and Mounds View (192) were third and fourth.

Sophomore Leah Kroening shot 46 to lead the Ponies, who placed fourth in last week’s conference opener, and Erin Thiets finished one shot back with a 47 on the challenging par-38 front nine.

“Leah must have parred five holes and it looked like she was on her way to a 41 or 42, but stumbled a little down the stretch,” Ponies coach Nate Schwarz said. “She did have a good round, but she could have had an outstanding one.”

Amanda Wolf turned in a 50 and Ana Reding shot a 51 for Stillwater, which also received a 54 from Maddie Luoma and a 57 from Rachel Billingsley.
