Boys tennis: Woodbury upends Ponies

WOODBURY — A strong singles lineup helped carry Woodbury to a 5-2 Suburban East Conference boys’ tennis victory over Stillwater on Tuesday.

The Ponies (1-6 SEC, 2-6) recorded hard-fought victories at first and third doubles, but Woodbury had little trouble while winning at second through fourth singles and also at second doubles.

Moving into the first singles slot, junior Mitch Johnson played well for the Ponies before falling to Matt Schubert 7-6 (7-5), 6-3. The Royals dropped just four games combined in the three remaining singles matches.

Nick Rheinberger, who normally plays first singles, combined with Daniel Ahrendt to post a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory for the Ponies at first doubles while John Talbot and Brady Tynen also pulled out a 6-4, 5-7, (10-4) win at third doubles.

“A little mix in the lineup and we got nice wins from first and third doubles, but those were the only two wins we were able to manage,” Stillwater coach Dave Kahl said. “Mitch Johnson played a terrific, hard-hitting match at first singles.”

Woodbury’s David Lundberg and Arie Scherson upended Nate Anderson and Matt Treacy 6-1, 6-1 at second doubles.

l Stillwater dropped two exhibition doubles matches on Tuesday as the Royals defeated Steig Peterson and Kurt Patterson 6-3, 3-6, (10-7) and Jack Leach and Stone Xiong 6-3, 6-0.
