Boys golf: Stillwater finishes fifth in SEC opener

WOODBURY — The Stillwater boys’ golf team kicked off its Suburban East Conference campaign with a fifth-place finish in Tuesday’s opener at Prestwick Golf Club.

The Ponies posted a score of 313 to finish nine shots behind co-winners Hastings and Woodbury, who turned tied at 304. Forest Lake and East Ridge tied for third place with matching scores of 309.

“Not our best day, but respectable,” Stillwater coach John Scanlon said.

Sammy Sicard and Lars Lillehei each shot 77 to lead the way for the Ponies, who also scored a 78 from Evan Anderson and an 81 from Crosby Joy. Tony Pulido (82) and Tyler Fitzsimmons (84) were not far off the pace.

“We got off to a rough start, but hung in there,” Scanlon said. “We knew Hastings and Forest Lake were strong and East Ridge and Woodbury played well on their home track. We are going to have to bring our ‘A’ game to win in this conference.”

l The Ponies also sent a team to compete at the Bunker Hills Invite on Tuesday and they placed ninth out of 31 teams. Will Henschell’s 75 set the pace for Stillwater, which turned in a score of 318. Stillwater Red finished 18th in the same tournament with a score of 336.

Ponies pull off daily double

Many spring sports teams have been forced to play doubleheaders this spring, but few have gone to that extreme quite like the Stillwater boys’ golf team on Monday.

The Ponies finished second in the Don Saatzer Invitational at Hastings Country Club in the morning before returning home to prevail in an eight-team invitational at Stillwater Country Club in the afternoon. After arriving back in Stillwater, the Ponies essentially climbed out of the van and went directly to their assigned starting tee for the second half of Monday’s doubleheader.

“I gave the kids the option and they all wanted to play,” Ponies coach John Scanlon said. “It was their first and second team match of the year so there was some pent-up demand. If I told them there was an 8 p.m. shotgun (Monday night) they probably would have played.”

Stillwater senior Lars Lillehei shared medalist honors with three other players after carding a 1-over 73 at the 21-team Don Saatzer Invitational, where the Ponies turned in a team score of 314 to finish just one shot behind Suburban East Conference rival Forest Lake (313). East Ridge (315) finished one shot behind the Ponies in third place while Mounds View and Hill-Murray tied for fourth at 318.

Sammy Sicard shot a 77 for the Ponies while Will Henschell and John LeClair completed the scoring with matching 82s. Seamus McGuinness and Crosby Joy were not far back while shooting 85s.

“Hastings was our first varsity team event, so it was nice to play well,” Scanlon said. “We had contributions from Lars and Sammy, which is expected, but also from sophomores Will Henschell and John LeClair, which is a pleasant surprise. Crosby and Seamus were not far behind with 85s. With (advanced placement) tests, we were not able to play some of our other top players, so this team finish demonstrated the depth of our team.”

Sicard paces Ponies at SCC

Undeterred by the quick turnaround and lack of a proper warm-up, Sammy Sicard shot a 4-over 76 to claim medalist honors in Monday’s eight-team invitational at Stillwater Country Club.

“A first place and a second place on the same day, that is impressive,” Scanlon said. “Sammy won his first tourney of the year — hopefully the first of many. He is so talented and no one works harder than Sammy.”

Sicard helped Stillwater Red post a winning score of 317, which was eight shots better than runner-up Tartan (325). Orono followed in third place at 327 and Stillwater Black, led by a 78 from Tyler Fitzsimmons and an 81 for Bradon Caywood, finished fourth at 333.

It was a successful end to a long day for the Ponies, who also have conference events scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday this week.

“It’s pretty rare to do it and it’s probably not something I can remember doing,” Scanlon said.
