Synchronized swimming: Ponies win again

MAPLE GROVE — With victories in all four events on Thursday, the Stillwater synchronized swim team recorded a 37-10 East Metro Conference victory over Osseo/Maple Grove at Maple Grove High School.

The Ponies (3-0 EMC, 6-0) received a first-place finish from Skyler Olson in the solo competition, whose winning score of 67.0 was 4.5 points higher than Marisa Lee of Osseo/Maple Grove.

“The girls performed really well,” Ponies coach Kathy Henderson said. “They were still riding high after their annual show last Saturday and were excited to get some scores from the judges. Skyler was able to beat a talented soloist from Osseo/Maple Grove.”

Stillwater also occupied the top two spots in the duet and trio events. Katie Koenning and Mariah Smith earned the top score at 67.5 while teammates Claire Haws and Vessa Pearsall were close behind in second place with a score of 67.0. Koenning, Pearsall and Olson also turned in the top score in trios at 70.5, edging out teammates and runner-ups Elise Adrian, Emily Adrian and Claire Haws (67.833).

“Although we have routines that compete against each other in the duet and trio categories, they root for each other in such a positive way because this is such a team sport,” Henderson said. “First or second place earns points for our overall team score and we were able to pull off those top places in every event. The team event is always the most fun to watch and our team earned some high marks from the judges and lots of cheers from the audience.”

The Ponies closed out the meet with a score of 72.167 in the team competition.

Stillwater, which has won at least 172 consecutive dual meets, closes out the regular season at Forest Lake on Tuesday.

“That one will be tough,” Henderson said. “Forest Lake is our toughest competitor in our conference. They always have great routines and are very competitive. We’ll be prepared though.”

l Stillwater athletes also posted the 12 highest figures scores on Thursday, led by top-three finishers Sophie Ogaard (60.140), Paige Green (60.017) and Sami Sonnee (59.298).
