ST. PAUL — With a boost from three singles victories, Cretin-Derham Hall held off Stillwater 5-2 in Tuesday’s Suburban East Conference boys’ tennis match.
It was the conference opener for the Ponies (0-1 SEC, 1-1), who collected their lone points at first singles and third doubles.
Nick Rheinberger outlasted Jake Ernst 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 at first singles while Stillwater’s John Talbot and Steig Peterson turned back Matt Miller and Conor Leyden 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 at third doubles. Talbot and Peterson trailed 5-2 in the second set before rallying to win in a tie-breaker and won the third set going away.
“We won a couple of hard-fought three-set matches at first singles and third doubles,” Kahl said. “Nick really hit his stride in the third set and rolled to a victory. John and Steig lost their first set and trailed 5-2 in the second before making a dramatic comeback and getting our second point.”
Stillwater lost three-set matches at second singles and second doubles. Mitch Johnson fell to Cretin-Derham Hall’s Brandon Steer 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Steer trailed 5-4 in the third set before winning the last three games.
At second doubles, Josh Vievering and Dan Swanson won five straight games to take a 5-3 lead before Brady Tynen and Matt Treacy won three in a row and was serving for the match. The Raiders broke serve and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the tie-breaker before closing out a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (10-8) victory.
“We had good chances at a couple more points, but Cretin won close three-setters at second singles and second doubles,” Kahl said. “Mitch lost in a terrific match at second singles. Matt and Brady lost a wild, streaky and exciting match at second doubles.”
The Raiders won in straight sets at third and fourth singles and first doubles.
