OAK PARK HEIGHTS — It needed three sets to prevail at first singles and first doubles, but the Stillwater boys’ tennis team completed a 7-0 nonconference sweep of North St. Paul in Tuesday’s season opener at Stillwater Area High School.
“Well, it’s good to get off to a good start,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “It was chilly, but we were glad to get it in.”
Nick Rheinberger rebounded nicely from a sluggish start in his match at first singles and pulled away for a 1-6, 6-0, 6-2 victory over Neil Vruno. Stone Xiong and Brady Tynen also needed three sets while pulling out a 6-4, 5-7, (10-6) win over Nick Dunham-Oliver Suepon at first doubles.
The Ponies also received singles victories from Mitch Johnson, Brian Treacy and Daniel Ahrendt. Nate Anderson and Matt Treacy posted a 6-3, 6-0 victory at second doubles while John Talbot and Riley Hollerbach won by scores of 6-1, 6-1 at third doubles.
“We had a really nice comeback at first singles from Nick Rheinberger after dropping the first set and it was a nice first varsity match performance at third doubles for John Talbot and Riley Hollerbach,” Kahl said. “First doubles pulled off the closest match of the day.”
l In exhibition doubles matches on Tuesday, Stillwater’s Jonathan Luk and Jack Leach posted a 6-4 victory while twin brothers T.J. and Jackson Arland lost a close match 7-6 (7-5).
