Girls basketball: Balzart named MVP for Ponies

Senior Haley Balzart was named the Most Valuable Player for the Stillwater girls’ basketball team at its postseason awards banquet.

Balzart, who received honorable mention All-Suburban East Conference recognition, ranked third for the Ponies with 151 points this season and also pulled down a team-high 164 rebounds. She also led the team with 40 deflections and 29 dives on the floor, which led to her receiving the GATR Award.

The Ponies finished the season with a 6-21 record, including 2-16 to place ninth in the Suburban East Conference. Stillwater lost to White Bear Lake 55-30 in the Section 4AAAA quarterfinals.

Paige Becker, who led the Ponies with 208 points and ranked second with 160 pounds, received the Gym Rat Award and also took a team-high nine charges. Becker and Erin Thiets, who missed the entire season with a knee injury, were chosen to serve as captains for the 2013-14 team.

Annie Lauber and Meg Pepera received Academic All-State honors for the Ponies, whose signature victory was a 50-47 triumph over eventual Class AAA state tournament qualifier Hill-Murray on Dec. 27.

Rilee Day was named the Most Improved Player for the Ponies.

Natalie Ingram and Megan de St. Aubin were named MVPs for the B-squad and freshman teams.
