Applications taken for plots

AFTON — Community Foundation funded a grant request for Afton to develop a community garden for residents of the Lower St. Croix. Valley.
The Rinta Community Gardens are located south of Hudson Road between Indian Head Trail and Century College Truck Training Center. Each garden plot will be about 40-foot-by-40-foot with walking paths between plots.

YSB seeks volunteers

Youth Service Bureau is starting a volunteer program, with their most urgent need a volunteer receptionist from 4:30 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, according to director of development and communications Allissa Obler
The volunteer receptionist meets and greets guests, registers clients and records payments for service. They would also answer incoming calls and redirect calls as needed. YSB needs someone who can commit for one or more nights on an ongoing basis.

Collaboration seeks participants

Darn Knit Anyway and Valley Outreach are collaborating to help restock the food shelves through [email protected] Knitting and crocheting enthusiasts are expected to bring non-perishable food items to Darn Knit Anyway from April 11 to 14. Darn Knit is part of the Minnesota Yarn Shop Hop where people tour and shop a series of retailers at 16 shops in the metro area.

Last year shoppers participating in the metro-wide shop hop raised 500 pounds of food and over $4,700 in cash donations to their local food shelves.

Shoppers at Darn Knit donating a nonperishable food item or $5 will, while supplies last, receive a unique collectible charm to commemorate participation in this year’s event. Darn Knit’s goal is to collect 500 pounds of food and $500 for Valley Outreach.

SCB performs ‘Sleeping Beauty’

The St. Croix Ballet (SCB) performs the classic ballet “Sleeping Beauty” April 26-28 at Stillwater Area High School.

The lead role of Sleeping Beauty is danced by Allegra Sweeney at the Saturday and Sunday performances and Caitlyn McDermott is featured at the Friday and Saturday night shows. Show times are 7 p.m. on April 26, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. April 27, and 2 p.m. April 28.

Sweeney and McDermott are joined by St. Croix Ballet alum John Roesler, dancing the role of the Prince.

Groups seek to give back to troops

Youth Service Bureau and Stillwater Beyond the Yellow ribbon are joining forces to support military families throughout the St. Croix Valley and need your help.
The groups are seeking nominations from people who know a service member who’s deployed or stationed outside of the United States so they can send care packages to them. Eligible service members include: Any St. Croix Valley Resident or Stillwater Area High School Graduate currently deployed or stationed outside of the U.S. To submit a nomination email the following information to [email protected]

  • Service member’s name, address and a photo (optional)
  • Reason you’d like them to receive a package

Nominations will be highlighted at the Meet Our Local Heroes event at Youth Service Bureau’s Stillwater office on April 20.
