Lake Elmo man must register as sex offender

A Lake Elmo man was sentenced to 10 years probation and must register as a sex offender after being convicted of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in 10th Judicial District Court.

Court documents said Robert Mark Dengler was convicted in connection with a November 2011 incident in which he inappropriately touched his niece.

The niece told Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies that in the fall of 2004, she was baby sitting Dengler and his wife’s two sons when the couple returned home and Dengler allegedly began making comments about his niece’s breasts, walked up behind her while she was sitting on the couch, and put his hands down her shirt underneath her bra, according to a court report.

The victim said Dengler made many comments about her body in the past. She also recalled an incident when she was in high school when she claimed Dengler took her to his room and showed her a pornographic film. She added that she didn’t report that incident because she didn’t want to disrupt her family.

When the sheriff’s deputies spoke with Dengler, court documents state that he said, “I didn’t think I went down her shirt. We were just goofing around.” Documents added that Dengler was unable to remember reaching under his niece’s clothes, just that he was “grabbing her shoulders.”

Dengler must serve 15 days in jail with credit for one day served, not use drugs or alcohol and submit to random testing. He must register as a sex offender and complete sex offender treatment. He must also provide a DNA sample, have no same or similar offenses and have no unsupervised contact with minors except his sons.
