This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Gymnastics — Junior Danielle Sneden receives the Most Valuable Athlete award for the Stillwater gymnastics team after joining teammate Caroline Hilpisch in receiving all-conference and all-state honors.
Nordic skiing — Senior Katie Stalland and junior Jake Watson receive the Most Valuable Athlete awards for the Stillwater girls’ and boys’ Nordic ski teams. Cayley Baird, Whitney Windmiller, Sara Stalland, Nora Shields and Robbi Strandemo join Katie in earning all-conference honors while Tim Lamanna, John Gaffney, Max Weber, Jeff Anderson, Andrew Hipp and Steve Pribyl are All-SEC for the Stillwater boys.
Girls basketball — Sarah Cotner is chosen MVP for the conference runner-up Stillwater girls’ basketball team (9-5 SEC, 14-12). Melanie Preiner joins the senior post player in receiving all-conference honors.
Boys swimming and diving — The Stillwater boys’ swimming and diving team names Joey Chapman its Most Valuable Athlete after joining Tony Dornfeld, Kyle Orf, Jeff Peterson, Tom Friant, Erik Semrud, Dave Pearson, Tom Schubbe, Nick Frost and Greg Wise in earning all-conference honors for the 10-0 Ponies, who also win the SEC with a 6-0 record.
Colleges — Stillwater graduate and Notre Dame senior Luke Watson earns All-America honors for the sixth time, including three in indoor track and field, after placing third in the one-mile race with a time of 4:06.48 at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
