Three members of the Team Afton USSA ski club were among the 18 who competed at the USSA Marriott Rocky/Central Junior National Championships earlier this month at Beaver Creek Resort in Colorado.
Stillwater Area High School sophomore Brent Barclay of Afton recorded his best finish while placing 17th in the Super G to go along with a 32nd-place in the men’s downhill and 57th after taking a fall on his second run in the men’s slalom.
Peter Baker of Afton finished 26th in the men’s slalom, 36th in the Super G and 47th in the downhill. Lake Elmo’s Sydney Schmelz finished 61st in the ladies slalom.
“The Junior Championships are the pinnacle of our sport for these young athletes,” Team Afton coach Tony Olin said prior to the competition. “They all had tremendous performances at the qualifying event in Marquette, Michigan, and will represent Team Afton and our home resort of Afton Alps in this competition.”
