MSHSL announces section assignments for next two years

The Minnesota State High School League announced its section assignments for the 2013-14 and 2014-15 school years and while there were not a large number of teams moving around there were some changes for Stillwater Area High School teams — and in the case of gymnastics, a significant one.

The MSHSL reclassifies teams every two years based on enrollment and then reshuffles the sections based on geography. Competition and strength of a section is not part of the criteria for placement. Every six years, however, the MSHSL changes its formula slightly and ignores the first guideline of moving as few schools as possible — which means larger changes are likely to occur during the next section realignment.

There were nine Stillwater teams that will see no change in the make-up of their section, including adapted soccer, boys basketball, boys and girls golf, boys and girls Nordic skiing, boys and girls swimming and boys tennis, and many of the other changes are relatively minor. The Ponies will, however, face a more challenging obstacle in qualifying for state in gymnastics with Roseville moving in from Section 5AA to replace departed St. Paul Highland Park in Section 4AA.

Roseville, a previous stumbling block for the Ponies prior to realignment two years ago, has won state championships six of the past eight years.

Girls basketball will be impacted slightly with Suburban East Conference champion Roseville, which was also the conference co-champion a year ago moving from Section 5AAAA into Section 4AAAA while Cretin-Derham Hall, which won 18 fewer games than Roseville this year, moving out of the section.

There was just one change in Section 4AAAAAA for football with upstart East Ridge replacing North St. Paul, which is rarely a contender in the section. The impact of this change with an East Ridge team that could be one of the favorites in the SEC next fall is lessened by the section cross-over that occurs in the large-school division.

The Stillwater boys’ and girls’ alpine ski teams have been perennial contenders in Section 4, but they have been shifted to Section 7, along with fellow Section 4 teams Mahtomedi and White Bear Lake. None of the current boys’ and girls’ teams in Section 7 placed among the top four at state this past year.

In girls’ and boys’ lacrosse, larger changes were already anticipated with the state field expanding from four to eight teams starting this spring. As a result, the two-time defending section champion Stillwater girls went from 15 to 10 teams in their section this spring and that number will drop to eight following the realignment that takes place next spring. Hastings and White Bear Lake, which was a semifinalist last year, will depart Section 4 after this year.

The Stillwater boys should benefit from the change in lacrosse as two-time section champion Totino-Grace has already departed Section 4 this spring and 2011 section champion White Bear Lake will also be gone starting in 2014, leaving Stillwater, East Ridge, Hill-Murray, Mahtomedi, North St. Paul, Park, Tartan and Woodbury to battle for a state berth.

Henry Sibley will replace Mounds View in Section 4AAA for baseball next spring and Hill-Murray is being replaced by Minneapolis South in Section 4AAA for volleyball starting in the fall.

An already rugged Section 4AAA in softball got stronger with Mounds View moving in to replace departed St. Paul Johnson and St. Paul Como Park while the only change is boys and girls soccer is Hill-Murray getting moved out of Section 4AA.

The remaining changes are not expected to have a significant impact. Washington Technology Magnet School will replace St. Anthony in boys and girls cross country and joins Section 4AA in boys and girls track, with East Ridge the only subtraction from the current section. Washington Technology will also join Section 4AA in girls tennis.

In boys hockey, Section 4AA will grow to nine teams with Irondale and Minnehaha Academy moving in and St. Paul Como Park departing for a different section. The Minnehaha Saints replace the St. Paul Blades in Section 4AA for girls hockey in Section 4AA.

Stillwater will also not see much in the way of changes for wrestling in Section 4AAA, with St. Paul Harding replacing Minneapolis South as the only alteration.
