This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Girls hockey — After joining teammates Tara Hayner, Krysta Skarda and Chelsey Jones in earning all-conference honors, senior Sarah Connelly garners the MVP award for the Stillwater girls’ hockey team.
Boys basketball — Sophomore Kevin Gullikson provided 20 points, but the Stillwater boys’ basketball team falls to top-seeded Tartan 61-52 in the Section 3AAAA semifinals at Arlington High School.
Boys swimming and diving — State qualifiers for the Stillwater boys’ swimming and diving team are plagued with a series of bad luck at the state meet. Diver Collin Grigg was unable to compete because of illness and Joey Chapman breaks in his hand while touching the wall in the preliminaries of the 50 freestyle. Stillwater’s top finishes came with a 13th-place showing by Jeff Peterson in the 100 butterfly (55.78) and a 15th-place effort from Dave Pearson in the 500 freestyle (5:01.40).
Boys hockey — Following a season in which he provided a team-high 19 goals and 20 assists, all-conference performer Phil Fox is chosen MVP for the Stillwater boys’ hockey team.
Alpine skiing — Seniors Katie Lee and John Brine are named the Most Valuable Athlete(s) for the Stillwater girls’ and boys’ alpine ski teams.
