SAHS Athletes of the Week
Sam Lagus ‑ Boys basketball
A reliable three-year performer for the Stillwater boys’ basketball program, Sam Lagus is not flashy but provides the Ponies with a little bit of everything from the point guard spot.
The 6-foot-0 senior effectively runs the show for the Ponies and is an effective scoring threat when needed. Lagus averaged just under seven points per game this season, but delivered a season-high 13 in Stillwater’s 56-41 Section 4AAAA quarterfinal victory over White Bear Lake and followed that up with 10 points and a stellar defensive effort in Saturday’s 78-65 semifinal win over top-seeded Roseville.
The Ponies finished the season with a 22-7 record after falling to Woodbury in the section finals on Wednesday.
Aaron Romportl ‑ Boys basketball
A shorter and stockier version of his backcourt mate Sam Lagus, Aaron Romportl features many of the same strengths during an outstanding senior campaign for the Ponies.
Romportl consistently frustrated opponents with his defense and hustle while also contributing offensively. He averaged more than seven points per game during the regular season and delivered a season-high 18 points in Saturday’s section semifinal victory over Roseville, including two 3-pointers in key spots to help the Ponies take control against the 10th-ranked Raiders.
Stillwater (13-5 Suburban East Conference, 22-7) posted four wins against teams ranked in the top 10 this season.
