This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Wrestling — Four Stillwater wrestlers earn trip to the state tournament as Dustin Dahlblom (145 pounds) and Chris Anderson (130) win individual section titles and teammates Ryan Schumacher (112) and Alex Cadwell (215) place second to join them in the state field. Prior to the state tourney, Dahlblom receives Academic All-State honors from the Minnesota Wrestling Coaches Association.
Gymnastics — The Stillwater gymnastics team produces two state medalists as junior Danielle Sneden places fourth in the vault (9.825), sixth in the uneven bars (9.35), ninth in the floor (9.35) and 10th in the all-around with a score of 37.55. Eighth-grader Caroline Hilpisch places seventh in the vault (9.675), fourth in the beam (9.525), 29th in floor (8.725) and 16th in the all-around (37.175).
Soccer — After previously being named Minnesota’s Mr. Soccer, senior Dan Horst is chosen the Minnesota High School Boys Soccer Player of the Year by Gatorade, in association with Scholastic Coach & Athletic Director magazine.
Nordic skiing — Former Ponies Sean Laidig and Christian Brekke help lead the St. John’s University men’s Nordic ski team to its first-ever MIAC championship.
