St. Croix Prep’s commitment to character education took a twist Feb. 21 when world-renowned Arctic explorer Ann Bancroft presented the school with Polar Lucy. Polar Lucy was created as part of the “Peanuts on Parade” exhibit in St. Paul and joins Snoopy in representing the character and spirit of St. Croix Prep.
Polar Lucy represents Bancroft’s traverse of Antarctica with penguins holding computers representing the 3 million kids around the world that followed along. For the last 10 years, Polar Lucy has traveled to White Bear Lake, then to Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Germany before returning to Minnesota.
Polar Lucy then made her way to Bancroft, who knew immediately her home should be a school.
“I contacted St. Croix Prep right away,” she said. “Not just because my three nieces and nephew attend, but because St. Croix Prep is an environment that pushes the boundaries of learning. It’s a place that explores the ways to ignite its students to the far reaches of learning. It’s a perfect place for her.”
Bancroft presented Polar Lucy to SCPA’s lower school, speaking to the students about their dreams.
“What is your dream?” she asked. “I was dreaming about crossing Antarctica when I was 10 years old. It’s easy to think about dreams and talk about dreams. It’s not always easy to achieve your dreams. It takes perseverance. One step at a time. Just like crossing Antarctica. Keep your dreams close to your heart.”
