This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Nordic skiing — Cayley Baird places third in pursuit and Katie Stalland finishes 17th to help the Stillwater girls’ Nordic ski team to a runner-up finish behind Hopkins (759-722) at the state meet. The Stillwater boys place seventh in the team standings, led by Jake Watson with a 25th-place finish in a time of 33:00.0.
Girls hockey — Seeking its first trip to the state tournament since 1997, the Stillwater girls’ hockey team falls to North St. Paul 6-1 in the Section 3AA championship game at Roseville Ice Arena. Allie Thunstrom scores a hat trick to spark the Polars, who end Stillwater’s season at 16-8-4. The games features a friendly, but competitive rivalry, as Polars head coach Terry Magill’s daughter Steph is a junior forward for the Ponies.
Gymnastics — A season-best score of 143.875 is not enough to lift the Stillwater gymnastics team over White Bear Lake (143.875) at the Section 4AA Meet at Centennial High School. Roseville finishes third at 139.625. Ponies Danielle Sneden (vault, bars and floor) and Caroline Hilpisch (vault, beam and floor) each qualify for state as individuals in three events and the all-around.
Girls basketball — With Woodbury in control of the Suburban East Conference race, the Stillwater girls’ basketball team secures at least a share of second place in the league standings with a 52-48 victory over Forest Lake. Marie Jambois finishes 15 points and Sarah Cotner adds 11 for the Ponies.
