SAHS Athletes of the Week
Cela Peterson ‑ Girls Nordic skiing
Using a lineup with significantly less experience than the one that placed fourth a year ago, Cela Peterson helped the Stillwater girls’ Nordic ski team match that by placing fourth at the state meet on Feb. 14.
The freshman finished 51st in the state pursuit to rank as Stillwater’s third fastest skier behind Vessa Pearsall and Megan Weaver and two spots in front of Shelby Ahrendt, the only senior in the team’s state lineup. Peterson finished the 5-kilometer freestyle race in 18:56 and then covered the 5K classical pursuit in 19:11.7. In the entire field, there were only three other freshman who posted a faster time than Peterson.
Stillwater also finished second at the Suburban East Conference Meet.
Joe Quinn ‑ Boys basketball
Coming through with a big-time performance in one of Stillwater’s best wins of the season, Joe Quinn recorded a triple-double on Friday as the Ponies handed 10th-ranked Roseville a 68-52 SEC loss on Friday.
Quinn, who also delivered 13 points in Tuesday’s 81-70 victory over Forest Lake, pulled down 15 rebounds and blocked 10 shots to go along with his 11 points in the victory over the Raiders. The 6-foot-3 forward helped the Ponies to a 47-23 rebounding advantage while holding Roseville to 25 points below its season scoring average. Quinn also sank seven of eight free throws as the Ponies held a 24-6 scoring edge at the line.
The Ponies (10-5 SEC, 16-6) travel to Mounds View for an SEC game on Friday.
