It has been a successful week for Story Schwantes and the Stillwater girls’ alpine ski team, which wrapped up the Suburban East Conference championship on Jan. 31 and followed with a runner-up finish at the Section 4 meet on Wednesday to earn the team’s first state bid since 2010.

Schwantes contributed to each of those efforts as the sophomore placed fifth in the SEC finale with a time of 1:11.31 — just .34 behind teammate Natalie Gjermo — to give the Ponies a victory in the meet and the overall conference standings. She also finished seventh on Thursday to help the Ponies to a runner-up finish at the Section 4 meet.

Stillwater will compete at the state meet on Wednesday at Giants Ridge.

Stillwater’s depth and balance have been a trademark the past several seasons and that strength has been apparent throughout another success conference and section campaign, with the Ponies claiming titles in each.

Senior Steig Peterson finished first and second individually in Stillwater’s final Suburban East Conference races as the Ponies breezed to the overall title by more than 500 points over runner-up Forest Lake. Then on Wednesday, Peterson placed third for the Ponies behind teammate and runner-up Jake Allison as the Ponies defended their Section 4 crown.

The Ponies, who placed third at state a year ago, will travel to Giants Ridge in Biwabik for the state meet on Wednesday.
