Wrestling: Stillwater posts 1-2 record at Forest Lake tourney

FOREST LAKE — The Stillwater wrestling team posted a 1-2 record in Saturday’s Forest Lake Tournament.

The Ponies (6-1 SEC, 13-16) opened with losses to highly regarded Foley 45-16 and Ellsworth 51-25 before closing with a 63-13 victory over LeSueur-Henderson. Foley is ranked third in Class AA while Ellsworth is ranked fifth in Wisconsin’s Division 2.

Dillan Nelson was the only Pony to win three matches during a tournament that featured some intriguing individual match-ups but little drama down the stretch in the team scoring.

“It was a good day to kind of relax and wrestle,” Ponies coach Rich Keller said. “Ellsworth and Foley were pretty strong and we were licking our wounds a little, but I thought we wrestled pretty well.

Austin Jordan pinned his opponents from Ellsworth and LeSueur-Henderson, but also suffered his first loss since the Rochester Christmas Tournament on Dec. 14 while dropping a 7-3 decision against Tristan Manderfeld of Foley, who is ranked third in the state in Class AA. Jordan jumped out to a 3-0 lead before getting outscored 7-0 the rest of the way.

Wayde Hall also faced a tough match against third-ranked Tyler Runk at 120 pounds. The only point scored in Runk’s 1-0 victory came on a clasping call against Hall in the second period.

Foley was clinging to a 24-16 lead after Stillwater’s David Olson posted a 14-4 major decision over Jon Olson at 170 pounds, but the Falcons outscored the Ponies 21-0 in the last four matches to pull away.

“They matched up pretty good and we didn’t try to move anybody around,” Keller said. “They had their best kid on Austin and it has been a while since he lost. The match was pretty close after those first 10 weight matches.”

Stillwater’s other victories came from Christian Bahl at 106 pounds, Nelson at 132 pounds and Grant Wohlwend at 160 pounds.

The Ponies picked up five victories against Ellsworth, including pins by Jordan at 126 pounds, Collin Olson at 152 pounds and Sebastian Dingle at 195 pounds. Christian Bahl recorded a 13-3 major decision over Hunter Piepenburg at 106 pounds and Nelson defeated Brad Cain 10-6 at 132 pounds.

“I thought Collin Olson is really starting to wrestle well,” Keller said.

In the finale, Stillwater fell behind 9-0 against LeSueur-Henderson before winning five straight matches to take charge. The Ponies received five forfeits among their victories.

Bahl had an opportunity to knock off Austin Anderly, who is ranked No. 1 in Class A at 106 pounds, before falling 6-2 in the opening match. Bahl led 2-1 in the final seconds before Anderly scored a takedown and scored back points to pull out the hard-fought victory.

“We’re battle-tested and we’ve wrestled a really tough schedule all year,” Keller said. “To say we’re not concerned about the wins is not quite true, but we’re trying to get the kids ready for the end of the year.”
