This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Boys hockey — Senior Phil Fox scores four goals and adds two assists as the Stillwater boys’ hockey team scores on nearly half of its 19 shots on goal in a 9-6 Suburban East Conference victory over Mounds View. The teams combine for three goalie changes as Mounds View replaces its starter and then reinserts him for the third period while the Ponies also use two goalies in the game.
Girls basketball — Liz Petersen saves 11 of her game-high 14 points for the third quarter as the Stillwater girls’ basketball team pulls away for a 45-35 victory over Forest Lake.
Boys golf — Jason Gonnion is chosen the new boys’ golf coach following the retirement of Gary Howe, who in 22 seasons led the Ponies to five conference titles (1986, 1987, 1993, 1994 and 1995) and a section championship in 1993 when they placed fifth at state. Gonnion becomes just the third coach in Stillwater history following Howe and Stan Demoski, who started the program in 1961.
Gymnastics — Despite battling a team-wide flu bug, the Stillwater gymnastics team turns in a season-best score while dispatching Hastings 141.0-126-0 in a conference meet. Danielle Sneden (36.325) and Caroline Hilpisch (35.925) finished first and second in the all-around for the Ponies.
