Girls hockey: Ponies fall short against Mounds View

BLAINE — Mounds View held off Stillwater 3-2 to wrap up the Suburban East Conference girls’ hockey championship on Saturday at the Schwan Super Rink.

The third-ranked Mustangs (14-0-1 SEC, 21-0-1), who also defeated Stillwater (10-5-1, 12-9-1) in a one-goal game earlier this season, have clinched the title outright with three games remaining. Roseville (11-3-0, 15-6-0) remains in second place with 22 points while the Ponies follow in third with 20.

The Ponies did not go away after falling behind 2-0 in the first period, but Mounds View was solid throughout while extending its unbeaten streak to 22 games.

“It was a tough loss, a really hard-fought game,” Ponies coach Tony Scheid said. “I thought it was good experience for our team and you have to really give (the Mustangs) credit, they’re having a great year and they’re finding a way to win games.”

Sydney Brodt and Bella Sutton scored for the Mustangs in the first period before Sara Bustad scored to draw Stillwater within 2-1 in the second. Kathryn Larson scored on an assist from Brodt for a 3-1 advantage before Jane Vezina cut into that lead with a goal for Stillwater later in the period.

“We might have been squeezing our sticks a bit in the first, but then we settled down and played extremely well in the second and third periods,” Scheid said. “We came back and won the second period and then the third was a draw. We felt really good about our effort and (Brianna) Hersom did a nice job in net.

“We can play with anyone and we proved it over there. You always want to win, but We’re still improving and we’re still getting better. There’s an optimistic attitude on the team and strong leadership and we still feel really good about the back half of this season. We’d like to finish strong here and hit the ground running (in the postseason).”

Hersom finished with 15 saves in goal for the Ponies.

n Also on Saturday, the Stillwater JV team improved to 18-1-1 this season after knocking off the Mustangs 4-1. Olivia Konigson, Alex Sonnek, Olivia Arkell and Brooke Gedatus provided a goal each for the Ponies while Caitlin Carter took care of the rest in goal.
