John E. ‘Big John’ Roettger
EAU CLAIRE, Wis. — John E. “Big John” Roettger, 78, of Eau Claire, and formerly of Stillwater, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire surrounded by his family.
John was born on April 4, 1934, in Stillwater to Ernest and Rose (Ritzer) Roettger. He married Mary Ouradnik in 1952 and they had two children. He served in the Navy Seabees (Construction Battalion) which launched his career in construction. He was the general construction superintendent for Sheehy, Kraus-Anderson and M.A. Mortenson and was very proud of his contributions to the skylines of Minneapolis, St. Paul, Seattle, Denver and St. Louis. Upon retirement he enjoyed cheering on his grandchildren in their activities.
John is survived by daughter, Lisa (Ned) Donnellan, and son, Jay (Lisa) Roettger; grandchildren, Megan and David Donnellan, and Alyssa Roettger; siblings Mary Hammon, Tom Roettger, Ray (Susan) Roettger, Ernestine (Terry) Mahlum, Jim Roettger, Barbara (Arne) Thomsen and sister-in-law Nadji (John) Sutherland, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Rose Roettger.
Visitation is 5 to 7 p.m., with a memorial service at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at Our Saviors Lutheran Church, 1616 Olive St. in Stillwater, The Rev. Steve Molin will officiate. Refreshments are provided.
