Stillwater graduate and Minnesota Twins pitcher Glen Perkins has been selected to the provisional roster for the United States team slated to compete in the World Baseball Classic in March.
Twins catcher and St. Paul native Joe Mauer was also named to Team USA, which will be managed by Joe Torre and begin practice in Scottsdale, Ariz., on March 1. The Americans open play against Mexico on March 3, with Canada and Italy also in their four-team bracket. Pitchers and catchers are scheduled to report to spring training for the Twins on Feb. 12, with the full squad set to begin official workouts on Feb. 15. Minnesota’s first exhibition game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 23 against the Orioles.
Perkins, a relief pitcher entering his seventh year in the majors, is coming off his best season after recording posting a 3-1 record with 16 saves in 70.1 innings. He allowed 57 hits and 16 walks while striking out 78 batters. Opponents batted just .222 against the left-hander.
Perkins, who was an All-American at the University of Minnesota after graduating from Stillwater in 2001, lives in Lakeville with his wife Alisha and daughters Addison and Lyla.
