Home nurse visit program to expand
An additional 50 Washington County families will be receive home visits through the public nurse program after the Board of Commissioners Tuesday accepted a state grant to expand the program.
The $280,200 state Department of Health grant will add two home visiting public health nurses. Program goals include improved school readiness, reduced child abuse and neglect, improved parent-child attachment, healthy pregnancies and normal child growth and development.
By using the Healthy Families America home visiting nurse model, the county is eligible to receive state funds to expand the program.
House in park faces demolition
Semple Excavating and Trucking, Inc., was awarded an $11,600 contract Tuesday to demolish a house in the Lake Elmo Park Reserve that is no longer suitable to rent after the Washington County Board of Commissioners accepted the company’s bid.
When the county buys parkland, any suitable homes on the land are leased until the park site is developed. The Lake Elmo Park Reserve home had been leased by the county in the past. The company will demolish the residence and remove the debris.
River trail designation sought
Washington County will ask the state Department of Transportation to designate the metropolitan section of the Mississippi River Trail as a U.S. Bike Route after the Board of Commissioners approved the request Tuesday.
MnDOT manages the national Mississippi River Trail with local communities along the bicycle route. MnDOT is working with Newport, Cottage Grove, Grey Cloud Island and St. Paul Park on trail-related issues.
MnDOT has started preparing an application to designate the metro section of the trail between Elk River and Hastings as a U.S. Bicycle Route and asked the county to support the designation.
