Girls hockey: Stillwater blanks Royals

WOODBURY — An effective power play and a 3-to-1 advantage in shots on goal helped carry the Stillwater girls’ hockey team to a 6-0 Suburban East Conference victory over Woodbury on Friday at Bielenberg Ice Arena.

The Ponies (8-4-0 SEC, 10-8-1) scored four power play goals during a 10-minute stretch covering the second and third period to pull away in a game they outshot the Royals 61-17.

“They were in the box a lot,” Stillwater coach Tony Scheid said. “Their goalie held them in there, but we carried the play most of the game.”

Hannah Okerstrom scored twice in the opening period to give the Ponies a 2-0 lead, with assists coming from Hannah Heacox and Sara Bustad.

Stillwater added to its lead with two minutes remaining in the second as Sierra Smith scored with help from Heacox and Carlie Hart.

“We came out real fast and were moving the puck real well,” Scheid said. “It was definitely a good night for us.

“Sierra Smith is playing really well centering that line with (Jane) Vezina and Hart and I think they’ve been very effective. Hart is picking up her game and we’re starting to get more scoring from other players.”

The Ponies added power play goals from Katie Casto, Hart and Georgia Eger in the first eight minutes of the third period to pull away.

“(After losing to East Ridge last week) we talked about two steps forward and one step back, but we’re hoping to develop that consistency,” Scheid said. “We’re seeing a lot of jumps, like Georgia, who has been hurt, and Casto had a nice game on the blue line with Dana Almquist, who is playing really good shutdown defense and is really doing it all for us right now. I think we’re getting better and we’d like to finish up as strong as we can.”

It was plenty of support for goaltender Brianna Hersom, who finished with 17 saves. It marked the first shutout in five starts for Hersom, although she has allowed just one goal in two other games and only allowed more than two goals once all season.

“I thought she was solid in the net and she’s doing a nice job back there,” Scheid said.
