WHITE BEAR LAKE — Even with some of its regulars not participating on Thursday, the Stillwater boys’ swimming and diving team finished first in nine of 12 events and cruised to a 98-80 Suburban East Conference victory over White Bear Lake.
The Ponies (4-1 SEC, 4-1) won all three relays and picked up two first-place finishes from Sam Larson, who won the 200 individual medley (2:14.86) and the 100 backstroke (1:01.13).
Charlie Wyffels led a 1-2-3 finish for Stillwater in the 100 butterfly with a winning time of 1:00.59 and the Ponies also swept the top three spots in the 100 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Tucker Naugle (1:03.46) and Sam Hudachek (1:04.19) placed second and third in the butterfly. Jon Busse (52.58), Isaac Swanlund (53.10) and Eric Bromback (55.52) occupied the top three spots in the 100 freestyle while Larson, Naugle (1:02.77) and Bromback (1:03.96) posted the three fastest times in the backstroke.
“We moved some of the other kids up to swim varsity,” said Luke, who had some members of the team practice before joining the team on the deck for the meet. “Charlie Wyffels had a nice fly and (Jon) Busse in the 200 had a very nice race. Sam Payne had a lifetime best in the 500, he had a good meet.”
The diving scores were exceptional on Thursday, led by Liam Gibb with a winning total of 218.90. Colin Easton (208.05) followed in second place and Anthony Shanley finished fourth with a score of 180.30.
Riley Hollerback also contributed a first-place effort in the 100 breastroke with a time of 1:08.46.
