This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Gymnastics — Junior Danielle Sneden sets team records in the vault (9.75) and all-around (37.55), but the Ponies still fall short in a 140.0-137.65 Suburban East Conference loss against White Bear Lake.
Nordic skiing — Dealing with temperatures in the 50s, the Stillwater girls’ Nordic ski team found some snow at Troll Hollow and record a five-point victory over Roseville and the rest of the seven-team Suburban East Conference field. Cayley Baird and Katie Stalland finish first and second to set the pace for the Ponies. Jake Watson places third overall and teammates Tim Lamana and John Gaffney join him in the top 10, but the Stillwater boys place second behind Hastings.
Boys swimming and diving — Joey Chapman, Tom Schubbe, Jeff Peterson and Dave Pearson each win two events to send the Ponies to a 97-79 Suburban East Conference victory over Roseville.
Golf — In a month when golf courses are typically hosting cross-country skiers, Sawmill and Oak Marsh golf courses take advantage of the lack of snow and warm weather conditions to open for players in January.
