Girls hockey: Raptors rally past Stillwater

Jessie Andersen scored three times, including twice on the power play in the third period as East Ridge rallied for a 4-3 Suburban East Conference girls’ hockey victory over Stillwater on Tuesday at the St. Croix Valley Rec Center.

The Ponies (7-4-0 SEC, 9-8-1) outshot East Ridge by a 2-to-1 margin or better in all three periods — and 38-17 in the game, but were unable to hold the lead provided by Carlie Hart early in the third period.

“I thought we played well enough to win, but it’s got to be three periods of solid hockey and you have to play with discipline,” Stillwater coach Tony Scheid said. “This is really a tough loss for us and it’s kind of two steps forward, one step back right now. We’ve got to figure things out here, the playoffs are just around the corner.”

Hart scored one minute into the third period to provide a 3-2 lead, but Andersen scored power play goals at 5:36 and 14:11 to swing the game in East Ridge’s favor. Andersen also scored three minutes into the game to give the Raptors an early lead.

Georgia Eger and Jane Vezina answered for Stillwater in the first in building a 2-1 lead, but Anya Hafiz tied the game for the Raptors with less than two minutes remaining in the second.

Goaltender Katherine Ahmann turned away 35 shots to keep the Raptors in the game.

“Their goaltender played really well, you have to give them credit,” Scheid said. “That’s the way it is in our conference, you have to come to play every night and play three periods to win.”
