Alpine skiing: Stillwater girls win SEC opener

WELCH — The Stillwater girls’ alpine ski team emerged from a three-team battle to win Thursday’s season-opening Suburban East Conference meet at Welch Village.

Led by a balanced lineup, the Ponies scored 807 points to outdistance runner-up East Ridge (798) and third-place Mounds View (786). Hastings was a distant fourth with 635 points.

The 10-team event was plagued by a variety of issues, including timing problems on the boys’ course that prevented them from competing so that will be conducted at a date to be determined.

Belen Mora finished sixth in a time of 1:00.57 to pace the tightly-packed Ponies, who placed seven skiers among the top 21. Natalie Gjermo followed in seventh place with a time of 1:00.86 and Story Schwantes placed 11th at 1:02.69. Sydney Evensen (1:05.06) and Rachel Amos (1:05.22) finished 17th and 18th while teammates Ashley Ludack (1:05.86) and Maddie Neubauer (1:06.12) followed in 20th and 21st.

“Note how close the girls were in times,” Ponies coach Mary Parcheta said. “They, too, were delayed and cold waiting at the top for their runs to start, but they did great. It was a real plus for them to win and it gave them much needed confidence.

“The girls were all troopers and rose to the challenges.”
