Girls hockey: Ponies turn back WBL

 

VADNAIS HEIGHTS — Jane Vezina struck twice during Stillwater’s three-goal outburst in the second period as the Ponies rolled to a 6-2 Suburban East Conference victory over White Bear Lake on Thursday at the Vadnais Heights Sports Center.

The victory keeps Stillwater (6-3-0 SEC, 8-7-1) in a tie for second place in the conference standings with Roseville (6-2-0, 10-4-0). Both teams trail league leader Mounds View (7-0-1, 14-0-1) by three points.

Hannah Okerstrom scored less than three minutes into Thursday’s game on an assist by Hannah Heacox and Carlie Hart followed with an unassisted goal at 6:15 for a 2-0 cushion.

Vezina scored two minutes into the second period for a three-goal cushion and Kourtney Jancze followed with a power play goal two minutes later for a 4-0 advantage. Vezina struck again at 12:04 to increase Stillwater’s lead to 5-0.

The Bears (0-5-4, 3-8-4) received goals from Kristi Longendyke and Alexis Lyons in the third period, but Sara Bustad added a power play goal for the Ponies at 15:35 to complete the scoring.

Stillwater, which snapped a two-game losing streak, outshot the Bears 30-17. Allison Pasiuk finished with 15 saves in goal for the Ponies.
