Natalie Johnson — Girls basketball
The Stillwater girls’ basketball team has taken a few lumps with a largely inexperienced lineup, but the Ponies celebrated a 50-47 win over host Hill-Murray in last week’s holiday tourney.
Junior wing player Natalie Johnson contributed 16 points to lead all scorers in the victory over the Pioneers as Stillwater snapped a four-game losing streak. The victory looked even better after Hill-Murray defeated SEC teams Mounds View and Cretin-Derham Hall in its next two games. Johnson also led the Ponies with 13 points in Stillwater’s 57-36 loss to Robbinsdale Cooper in the third-place game on Saturday.
Stillwater (0-4 SEC, 3-8) hosts Woodbury in a conference game Friday.
Devin Cates — Boys hockey
An opening-round setback in the Silver Division of the Schwan Cup boys’ hockey tournament didn’t deter the Ponies as they responded with back-to-back victories over Apple Valley and Roseville to finish fifth.
Sophomore forward Devin Cates contributed to a balanced scoring attack for the Ponies as his two first-period goals provided a fast start in Friday’s 4-3 victory over the Raiders on the consolation finals. He was also one of six goal scorers in Stillwater’s 6-0 victory over Apple Valley on Dec. 27 and tallied a goal in the team’s 3-2 opening-round setback against Andover.
The Ponies (2-2-1 SEC, 5-4-1) travel to Mounds View for an SEC game tonight.
