The United States Junior Team under the direction of Stillwater boys’ hockey coach Phil Housley has advanced to the gold medal game of the IIHF World Junior Championships after topping Canada 5-1 in Thursday’s semifinals in Ufa, Russia.
The Americans received two goals apiece from Jake McCabe and John Gaudreau in the victory over a team the U.S. lost to 2-1 in pool play.
The gold medal game is slated for Saturday and will be televised on NHL network starting at 7 a.m. (CST).
“We got the start we wanted, scoring the all-important first goal,” Housley said. “We wanted to dictate the pace of the game early and we were able to do that and then it carried into the second period. We’re going to enjoy this win tonight and then start thinking about the gold medal game tomorrow.”
