Girls hockey: Ponies finish fourth at Edina tourney


EDINA — The Stillwater girls’ hockey team placed fourth at last week’s Edina Abra Holiday Tournament at Braemar Ice Arena.

The Ponies (8-7-1) opened the tourney with a 4-2 quarterfinal victory over Coon Rapids, but followed with one-goal losses against Edina (2-1) and Irondale (3-2 in OT) in the semifinals and third-place games.

Sara Bustad gave the Ponies a lift with two first-period goals and they eventually opened a four-goal lead in a quarterfinal victory over Coon Rapids on Dec. 26.

Jane Vezina and Daniella Reardon each added goals in the second period for Stillwater before the Cardinals closed the gap with a goal late in the second period and midway through the third.

Stillwater outshot the Cardinals 22-15 in the second and third periods.

“I didn’t think we got outplayed in the first period, it was just a matter of not hitting the net,” Ponies coach Tony Scheid said.

Bustad provided the lone goal for Stillwater in the second period after falling behind 2-0 on goals by Edina’s Taylor Williamson and Emily Fuchs.

The Hornets (9-4-3) went on to defeat Lakeville South 2-0 in Friday’s championship game.

Allison Pasiuk finished with 30 saves in goal for the Ponies, who survived a lackluster first period in which they were outshot 15-3.

Samantha Donovan’s overtime goal was the game-winner as the Knights defeated Stillwater for third place in Friday’s finale.

Dana Almquist scored on the power play in the opening minute of the second period, but Irondale answered with goals by Meghan Pieper and Alex Toupal for a 2-1 lead.
