10 years ago this week….
This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Wrestling — Competing at the prestigious 32-team Minnesota Christmas Tournament, the Stillwater wrestling team receives a runner-up finish from defending state champion Dustin Dahblom at 152 pounds and third-place finishes from Chris Anderson at 130 pounds and Alex Cadwell at 215 pounds. The Ponies total 80.5 points to place 15th in the team standings.
Alpine skiing — John Brine claims the individual title, but the Stillwater boys’ alpine ski team places second behind Edina at the season-opening Wild Mountain Invitational. Michelle Janacek finishes second to lead the Stillwater girls, who also finish second at the 22-team event.
Boys basketball — Miles Kane scores 25 points and hits a 12-footer in the final seconds to give the Ponies a 71-70 lead, but Patrick Williams connects on a buzzer-beater from 25 feet out as Blaine overtakes Stillwater 73-71 in a nonconference boys’ basketball game. Williams also hit a desperation shot from well beyond half court to end the third quarter and led all scorers with 26 points.
Football — After spending much of his rookie season on the practice squad, Stillwater graduate and defensive lineman Nate Dwyer is added to the 53-man roster for the Arizona Cardinals’ season finale at Denver. A fourth-round draft pick out of Kansas, Dwyer was placed on the inactive list during the first two weeks of the season.
