Sports briefs: Stillwater girls advance in tourney; boys fall short against Andover


The Stillwater girls’ hockey team advanced to the semifinals of the Edina ABRA Invitational with a 4-2 quarterfinal victory over Coon Rapids on Wednesday. The Ponies (7-5-1) will face host Edina (7-4-3) in the semifinals on Thursday at 7:15 p.m. The tournament wraps up on Friday with the third-place game at 3:30 p.m., and the championship game at 6 p.m.

n The Stillwater boys’ hockey team, meanwhile, fell to 16th-ranked Andover 3-2 in the quarterfinals of the Schwan Cup Silver Division on Wednesday. The Ponies (3-4-1) will face Apple Valley, an 8-1 loser against Prior Lake, in today’s consolation semifinals.

n In other holiday tourneys this week, the Stillwater girls’ basketball team will face the host Pioneers in the first round of the Hill-Murray Tournament on Thursday while the Stillwater boys will face Shakopee and Lakeville North on Thursday and Friday.
