Girls basketball: Ponies fall to defending conference champs
WHITE BEAR LAKE — Danielle Renner led a balanced scoring attack for White Bear Lake as the Bears jumped out to a large halftime lead and cruised to a 52-26 Suburban East Conference girls’ basketball victory over Stillwater on Friday night.
Stillwater’s Paige Becker led all scorers with 11 points, but the Ponies (0-4 SEC, 2-6) struggled while falling behind 27-9 in the first half.
Haley Balzart and Madeline Weidner each added four points for Stillwater, which has lost four in a row and is still seeking its first conference win.
Thirteen different players scored for the Bears (2-2, 2-7), with Renner setting the pace with 10 points. White Bear Lake is the three-time defending conference champion and has advanced to the state tournament each of the past four years.
The Ponies will face Hill-Murray (3-4) in the quarterfinals of the Hill-Murray Tournament starting on Thursday. Game time is 8:15 p.m.
The remaining quarterfinal match-ups in the eight-team event include: Cretin-Derham Hall vs. Robbinsdale Cooper; Wayzata vs. Totino-Grace; and Mounds View vs. Centennial.
