Girls basketball: Raiders outlast Stillwater 57-51

ST. PAUL — Unable to maintain its fast start in the second half, the Stillwater girls’ basketball team fell short in a 57-51 Suburban East Conference loss to Cretin-Derham Hall on Friday night.

The Ponies (0-2 SEC, 2-4) scored seven straight points to erase a three-point halftime deficit, but Cretin-Derham Hall (2-0, 3-2) answered with an 8-0 run to surge in front with a 31-27 lead.

Jordyn Alt, a 6-foot-2 junior forward who led all scorers with 21 points, hit two 3-pointers during that stretch as the Raiders regained the lead.

“We had back-to-back defensive breakdowns that allowed their best player two open 3-pointers,” Ponies coach Gerard Coury said.

The Ponies did not help their cause while committing 31 turnovers, although they did outscore Cretin-Derham Hall 19-7 at the free throw line.

“Too many defensive mistakes and way too many wasted offensive possessions,” Coury said.

Annie Lauber and Paige Becker each finished with 14 points to lead the Ponies, who also received 11 points from Natalie Johnson.
