John Gerhard Erickson, 95, of Stillwater, died peacefully on Dec. 8, 2012.
John was born in Northfield, Minn., July 14, 1917, to Peter G. and Josephine (Peterson) Erickson. His family moved to Minneapolis in the 1920s, then to St. Louis Park, Minn., where John graduated from high school in 1934. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree from St. Olaf College in Northfied, his Master’s Degree from North Dakota State in Fargo, N.D., and his PhD in organic chemistry from the University in of Minnesota in 1945.
John worked as a research chemist at American Cyanamid Co. in Connecticut, at General Mills in Minneapolis, his in final 23 years before retirement at 3M Co.
John married Elizabeth Barnes in Minneapolis in 1954, and in 1957, they moved to Stillwater. In 2000, they moved to Boutwells Landing Retirement Community.
John was a true scholar and man of great integrity. He was a conservationist, linguist, genealogist, bird watcher, and world traveler.
John was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Paul and Edward; sister, Katherine; son, Rolf, son-in-law, Dick Staub, and grandson, Matthew Schmolke. He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Peter; daughters, Julia Schmolke (Tim), Torre Valley (Tim); 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sister, Gudrun de Laubenfels, and brother, Richard.
There is a memorial service at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, 2012, at the Episcopal Church of the Ascension 215 N. Fourth St. in Stillwater, followed by a reception in the parish hall. Private interment is at Fairview Cemetery in Stillwater.
