Girls swimming and diving: Rutscher named MVP for Ponies

The Stillwater girls’ swimming and diving team held its postseason awards banquet on Sunday at The Grand Ballroom in downtown Stillwater. The Stillwater girls’ swimming and diving team celebrated another outstanding season on Sunday with its postseason awards banquet at The Grand Ballroom in downtown Stillwater.

Senior Claire Rutscher, a University of Vermont recruit, was chosen the Most Valuable Athlete for the Ponies after earning all-conference and all-state honors.

The Ponies finished with an 11-0 record, including 9-0 in the Suburban East Conference to win its 10th conference title in a row. Stillwater, which extended its dual meet winning streak to 101 in a row, also won the Section 4AA championship and placed fifth at the MSHSL state meet. The Ponies also prevailed in the True Team section meet and placed third at True Team state.

Joining Rutscher in earning All-SEC honors were teammates Sammi Potts, Hannah Sneden, Mary Knaak, Kylie Burgess, Tiffany Vang, Megan Letkeman, Kristin Erf, Liz Click, Sophia Bisch, Abby Kunze and Sophie Barnes. Miranda Meier received honorable mention all-conference recognition. Bisch was also selected the SEC Swimmer of the Year.

Rutscher also led a solid cast of all-state performers that included Bisch, Erf, Knaak, Burgess and Click. Rutscher, Bisch, Erf, Knaak and Burgess also hit All-American Consideration times while competing at the state meet.

Sneden, one of 11 state qualifiers for the Ponies, received the Coaches Award while Potts, who served with Morgan Espelien, Rutscher and Sneden as captains, was this year’s recipient of the Kris Eichten Memorial Award.

Also announced at the banquet is that Erf, Knaak, Burgess and Morgan McBride will serve as captains for the 2013 team.
