Girls hockey: Ponies turn back East Ridge 2-1
WOODBURY — It was another one-goal game, but this time the Stillwater girls’ hockey team came out on top in a 2-1 Suburban East Conference victory over East Ridge on Friday night at Bielenberg Sports Center.
This marked the third straight game for Stillwater’s that was decided by one goal and was the first victory in four one-goal games overall this season.
The Ponies (1-1-0 SEC, 2-3-1) fell behind 1-0 after giving up a shorthanded goal to Jaedyn Walz in the first period, but Lauren Greeder evened the score with her first varsity goal at 4:15 of the second period.
Greeder’s goal started innocently enough at the end of a shift where her linemates had already left the ice. The freshman carried the puck through the neutral zone, past the blue line and to the top of the circle before firing a wrist shot past goaltender Katie Flanders.
“She used one of the defenders as a screen and that was a big-time goal for us that we needed,” Ponies coach Tony Scheid said.
The teams remained deadlocked until Hannah Okerstrom finished an end-to-end rush by providing the game-winner with just 1:27 remaining in regulation. Dana Almquist was credited with the assist.
“That was an outstanding effort by Okerstrom,” Scheid said. “Not a lot of girls can take the puck coast-to-coast and it was just a really determined effort to cut in and get a puck to the net and a great individual effort.
“She’s very explosive and when she gets going through that blue line area and is one of the fastest forwards out there. She uses her speed and always plays with a lot of tenacity. I think she’s one of the best forwards in the conference.”
Making her second start of the season, junior goaltender Brianna Hersom finished with 29 saves for the Ponies, who outshot East Ridge 35-30.
“She’s played extremely well and had done an outstanding job,” Scheid said. “As a junior, she’s really stepping up for us right now.”
