This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Girls hockey — Megan Ahlers, Sarah Connelly and Chelsey Jones each score a goal during a 41-second stretch late in the second period to help send the Stillwater girls’ hockey team to a 6-3 victory over Rosemount in its season opener.
Football — Senior lineman Alex Cadwell and running back Josh Rose are all-conference selections for the Stillwater football team (0-7 SEC, 1-8). Rose is also named the team’s Most Valuable Player.
Girls swimming and diving — Diver Emily Keefer (360.20) places seventh and Kelly Hackbarth finishes eighth in the 500 freestyle (5:18.74) to earn all-state honors for the Ponies at the Class AA state meet. Following the state meet, Hackbarth is named the Most Valuable Athlete for the Ponies at their postseason awards banquet.
Cross country — Allie Mensing is receives the Most Valuable Athlete award for the Stillwater girls’ cross country team while Collin Bushman receives the same honor for the Stillwater boys’ team. Bushman previously signed a national letter of intent to continue his running career at Mississippi State University.
Girls tennis — Marie Jambois is chosen the Most Valuable Player for the Stillwater girls’ tennis team (9-4). Teammates Megan Scully, Paige Bromen, Katie Scully, Jenna Wieden, Brittany Roth and Brittany Wahlin join Jambois in receiving All-SEC honors.
