SAHS Athletes of the Week
Kylie Burgess — Girls swimming and diving
Few, if any, girls’ swimming and diving teams have matched Stillwater’s success in the longer races over the past decade and Kylie Burgess helps lead another strong distance crew this year for the conference and section champion Ponies.
The junior won the 200 (1:53.60) and 500 (5:05.68) freestyle races on Saturday as Stillwater wrapped up its 11th consecutive section championship. She also swam on the first-place 200 (1:38.81) and 400 (3:36.74) freestyle relays to join teammates Claire Rutscher, Sophia Bisch and Kristin Erf as qualifiers in four events for this week’s state meet.
The Ponies posted an 11-0 dual meet record, including 9-0 in the SEC.
Morgan Espelien — Girls swimming and diving
Talk about re-loading, the Stillwater girls graduated three divers who qualified for the state meet a year ago and this year first-timers Liz Click and Morgan Espelien will be making their inaugural state appearances.
Espelien, who placed fourth with a score of 251.75 in the Section 4AA diving competition on Friday, has spent the past five years working and improving her dives behind some exceptional divers, including last year’s state trio and two-time state diving champion Maggie Keefer prior to that. The senior has been a model of perseverance while adding new dives and showing improvement throughout her five years on the team, which has won 101 straight dual meets.
