This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Golf — Stillwater junior Paige Bromen finishes third in the Junior Girls Division at the National Finals of the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship in Mesquite, Nev., an event set to be broadcast on ESPN. Her top drive measures 242 yards, 1 foot and 8 inches.
Boys cross country — Collin Bushman places fifth and Jake Watson 12th as the Stillwater boys’ cross country team finishes third at the Class AA state meet. Hopkins wins its fourth state title in five years with 82 points, followed by Marshall (92) and Stillwater (119).
Girls cross country — Defending individual state champion Ladia Albertson-Junkans places fifth at the girls’ cross country state meet with a time of 15:21.1. Brenna Carey of Big Lake claims the individual title in a time of 14:57.4.
Colleges — Former Ponies Mal Johnson and Andy Salmen are regular contributors for the Winona State University football team that reels off its seventh consecutive victory by defeating Concordia-St. Paul 55-12.
