The epic voyage of the SS Contessa is a little known, historically important and amazing story of an unlikely crew of international merchant seamen, gang of inmates from a local jail and a French harbor pilot. Their mission, Operation Torch, sets the stage for Gen. George Patton’s epic invasion of North Africa.

“Twelve Desperate Miles” is tangentially connected to The Stillwater Public Library Foundation (SPLF) which raises funds to enhance the library’s programs and collections. Steve Brady, SPLF president, has “the unique opportunity and great pleasure of introducing” (his) brother Tim and “Twelve Desperate Miles” to the Stillwater Library Community.’
