10 years ago this week….
This is a look back at some of the people and teams making news in the St. Croix Valley 10 years ago, as reported in the Stillwater Gazette.
Girls swimming and diving — Nine different Ponies win an event as Stillwater cruises past Park 94-79 in a Suburban East Conference dual meet. Ashley Reichow (200 free), Tavis Potter (200 IM), Kelsey Hausken (50 free), Emily Keefer (diving), Maggie Luke (100 fly), Kelly Hackbarth (100 free), Hannah Rivall (500 free), Samantha Hajlo (100 back) and Jenny Trooien (100 breast) each finish first for the Ponies, who also swept all three relays.
Boys cross country — Stillwater junior Jake Watson breaks the course record set by his older brother Luke Watson in 1996 with a winning time of 15:38 at the Alexandria Meet of Champions. Collin Bushman is the runner-up 15-seconds behind Watson as the Ponies post a winning score of 46. Later, Bushman and Watson finish 1-2 to lead Stillwater to a convincing victory at the SEC Meet, with Ricky Furseth, John Lahner, Brian Odegaard and Jeff Polley joining Bushman and Watson to earn all-conference honors.
Girls cross country — Ladia Albertson-Junkans wins her third consecutive individual conference title for the Ponies, who place sixth at the meet.
Boys soccer — After a scoreless first half, the Stillwater boys’ soccer team explodes for nine second-half goals — including seven during a nine-minute stretch — to win their section quarterfinal matchup against St. Paul Johnson. Led by Anthony Eichten with two goals, eight different players tally a goal for the Ponies, who outshoot the Governors 53-0.
