Girls tennis: Ponies advance to semifinals

OAK PARK HEIGHTS — The Stillwater girls’ tennis advanced to the Section 4AA semifinals after dispatching Woodbury 6-2 in Wednesday’s quarterfinals at Stillwater Area High School.

The Ponies (13-2) will face fourth-seeded East Ridge in the semifinals at the University of Minnesota’s Baseline Tennis Center on Friday at 9 a.m. The other semifinal features sixth-seeded Cretin-Derham Hall vs. second-seeded Mahtomedi, which defeated Stillwater in last year’s section finals.

Savannah Johnson posted a 6-0, 6-0 victory for the Ponies while competing at second singles.

Stillwater did not lose a set in four singles matches on Wednesday, dropping just five games combined. Natalie Phippen cruised to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Shanna Stevenson at first singles and Savannah Johnson blanked Mackenzie Schurhamer 6-0, 6-0 at second singles. Aliza Deming lost just one game in a victory over Brooke Hays at No. 3 singles and Jenna Sherrick stopped Angela Drehmel 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 spot.

The Ponies also prevailed in two of three doubles matches with Hannah Quinn and Shelby Ahrendt winning 6-2, 6-2 at the second spot and Maggie Corman and Jackie Ellingson winning by the same score at third doubles.

Woodbury collected its lone point at first doubles, where Taylor Monkman and Kathryn Kreibich defeated Robbie Ellingson and Shelby Anderson 6-4, 6-1.

“It was a good start to sections,” Ponies coach Dave Kahl said. “They teamed up their regular first and second singles players and got us at first doubles in a good match. The other six matches were finished or very close to being finished by the end of the first set at first doubles.”

n Stillwater also won three exhibition doubles matches on Wednesday. The teams of Amanda Williams-Remi Larson, Emily Frenchik-Clara Ilkka and Emma Germundson-Elizabeth Quinn each prevailed for the Ponies.
