WOODBURY — The Stillwater volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven in a row after defeating Woodbury 3-0 in Tuesday’s Suburban East Conference match. The Ponies prevailed by scores of 25-13, 15-9 and 25-11.
The victory helps the Ponies (5-0 SEC, 11-3) keep pace with Cretin-Derham Hall (5-0, 15-3) atop the league standings. Stillwater has not lost since falling to Apple Valley in a tournament on Sept. 8.
“The girls are just doing a really good job of staying steady and playing within themselves,” Stillwater coach Jamie Suapaia said. “We’re not trying to do too much and we are really focusing on staying within our means and every girls trying to do her part, whether it’s passing well, serving well, hitting the right spots or covering defense.
“The girls are getting well rounded and the depth of our bench — we got in all 12 kids, and they came in and did a fantastic job. Our pace did not slow down at all going into those subs.”
Bri Horwath delivered 20 kills to lead the attack while Savannah Sprenger finished with 13. Stephanie Dietrich and Brooke Hunter chipped in with eight kills apiece and Stephanie Houle finished with five kills.
Despite it being a short match, Maddie Brandon racked up 40 digs and the Ponies totaled 59 digs as a team. Susan Evans led the way with 35 set assists and strong serving throughout.
“It was another good job by our defense,” Suapaia said. “Everything we dug was in system and we just took care of the ball. It was pretty much a one-sided match from the first serve. Susan kept them out of system (with her serving) and throughout the match their setters were running around more than anything.”
